Not many people realize that Nunchucks originated in Southeast Asia sometime around the 17th Century. The earliest versions of this weapon were actually made from two nuns that had their heads connected together with a heavy chain or thick cord and then swung (or chucked) around the user's body in great sweeping motions.

After finding out that it was a bit too awkward and unwieldy twirling small sturdy nuns around during the heat of battle, the handles were soon switched over to the more conventional wood handles that we see today.
